I have no computer at home has "screwed up" so I have no program for my Garmin 305 where the data downloaded and I can not make the evidence of things spoken.
But try to give an explanation:
A Garmin GPS or any other, it marks a point on the map but not on a map like you mean it (roads, highways, rivers, highways).
You are a point in a coordinate and if you move to other coordinates the GPS knows how far it is between them and the speed at which you have gone or going and the height at which you were before and at the end.
not necessary to have the updated map of the mountain because the point is not exactly brand on the map. Not if you understand or not. Another example.
If you were in an offshore oil rig that measured 1 km wide and 1 km long, and with a gps you to put yourself out for a walk on the platform gps 4 km mark you every turn, because the km1 is a coordinate the other corner of the platform in another corner coordinate and 3 and 4 corner as well.
When you download to your computer, thanks to the programs that are, rise above the path you've done on a map. It is more reliable
